An unrepeatable trip to a unique place<\/h3>\n

The Royal European Academy of Doctors, the Quo Artis Foundation, My Planet First and the special collaboration from Ecuador of the FIDAL Foundation, have undertaken a joint project: The first scientific and cultural expedition to the Galapagos Islands and Ecuador.<\/p>\n

A unique and unrepeatable tour in which, for 12 days, the 95 participants of the expedition will be able to share unforgettable experiences with prestigious naturalists, Nobel Prize winners, internationally recognized artists and top-level scientists in an atmosphere of science, culture, emotion , relaxation and knowledge.<\/p>\n

Also in Quito, a World Heritage city, we will hold academic sessions at the University of San Francisco<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

This initiative is part of a program of our institution dedicated to environmental issues, sustainability and climate change, as a reflection of our scientific concern for an issue that will clearly mark the destiny of future generations if we do not do everything possible to remedy it.<\/p>\n

Why Gal\u00e1pagos<\/h3>\n

The Galapagos Islands, one of the most pristine places in the world, acclaimed for its precious biodiversity, is now also beginning to suffer the consequences of climate change, among other problems. In fact, it is this very topic, climate change, that will be the focus of the conferences and discussions that will take place during the expedition.<\/p>\n

The expedition is a completely unique opportunity to discuss, observe and agree together on a manifesto-declaration from the RAED that will then be shared with the international organizations responsible for debating climate change problems.<\/p>\n

Four Nobel laureates from different disciplines accompany us for the expedition; the honorary academic Dr. Rosal\u00eda Arteaga<\/strong><\/a>, former president of Ecuador, a group of naturalists specialized in various topics related to the environment of the Galapagos Islands and a group of thinkers and visual artists who will complement this unique group thanks to the collaboration of the Quo Artis Foundation<\/strong><\/a>, an international institution dedicated to the promotion of science through art, with which the RAED has initiated a close collaboration.<\/p>\n

Exploring the Galapagos Islands, particularly on this expedition, is undoubtedly one of the most incredible trips imaginable for the curious and demanding traveler. It is a unique opportunity to witness scenes of nature and be in close contact with native species, which live in an extremely protected environment and, furthermore, to be able to study, debate and reflect on the challenges that climate change and its other challenges present to the Galapagos Islands, having world-renowned experts and scientists as interlocutors.<\/p>\n

The Galapagos Islands are one of the most important natural history destinations on earth, they represent the first place listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and, of course, they are at the heart of Charles Darwin’s groundbreaking Theory of Evolution, which he published after his world voyage aboard the \u201cHMS Beagle\u201d. In fact, some of the 14 notebooks in which Darwin documented his thoughts were written after his visit to the Galapagos Islands in 1835.<\/p>\n

To quote Darwin, the \u201cincredible terrestrial life of the Galapagos Islands is complemented by incredible underwater life, where rich ocean currents converge to form the basis of a landscape of astonishing diversity. Giant tortoises roam freely and the lava rocks are filled with motionless marine iguanas. There are sea lions sleeping on the beaches and native penguins swimming close to the boat while the air is full of blue-footed boobies, magnificent frigatebirds or incredible cormorants.<\/p>\n

On this unique voyage, the ship will be captained by Eduardo Neira<\/strong>, the islands’ most experienced captain, who has done so for over 30 years. In fact, Eduardo Neira<\/strong> is not only the Captain of the Ship, National Geographic Endeavor II, but also a musician, composer, poet, writer and general editor of the magazine \u201cVerde Galapagos\u201d, dedicated to promoting its sustainability and caring for and preserving its environment.<\/p>\n

Due to the legal restrictions that govern the Galapagos Islands National Park, only a maximum of 95 passengers are allowed on board, but with the comforts of a large yacht, where food and comfort reach high quality levels.<\/p>\n

As mentioned above, on board the ship there will be evening discussions and seminars led by the experts involved in this unique voyage.<\/p>\n

Twice-daily zodiac departures to the different islands along the route will offer an unforgettable opportunity to see the unique animal species on which evolutionary theory was based, and will also provide expedition members with first-hand testimony. that the conservation of such a unique ecosystem will be achieved when political will unites with the knowledge of the most qualified scientists.<\/p>\n

One of the most important events of this trip will take place on Santa Cruz Island, where the Darwin Foundation is located, where high-impact scientific experiments are carried out. The participants will have the opportunity to enjoy a visit from the Foundation. Likewise, that day we will see the famous Galapagos giant tortoises and learn first-hand about some of their conservation characteristics.<\/p>\n

The expedition will also visit Quito, the capital of Ecuador declared a World Heritage Site, with one of the most beautiful and possibly best preserved historic centers in South America, where we will celebrate the acts of the VI Scientific Conference of the RAED. In addition to the artistic treasures of the city, the expedition will visit one of the most interesting places in the country, the Inti\u00f1an museum located in “The Middle of the World”, the place where the Equator Line crosses and divides both hemispheres and where magnetic phenomena linked to the so-called Coriolis effect can be clearly appreciated.<\/p>\n

OBJECTIVES<\/h2>\n

1. <\/span>Carry out the expedition with personalities who, due to their great scientific, media or artistic relevance, represent very authoritative voices, which will make the manifesto and the documents that come out of it have a great international repercussion<\/p>\n

2. <\/span>Identify and make explicit the major environmental problems that threaten the islands, especially from the perspective of those who, due to their prestige, may be able to get the message across to relevant international organizations involved in the issue.<\/p>\n

3. <\/span>Generate a series of high-quality products in various formats that serve to spread the concept of sustainable tourism, and to present Galapagos to the world as a model of environmental sustainability and care for its ecosystem and biodiversity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

EXPEDITION PROGRAM<\/h2>\n

25th August – Thursday<\/h3>\n

Departure from Spain on Iberia Flight 6453 to Quito at 12:00. Arrival in Quito at 4:00 p.m. local time. Transfer to the Eurobuiding hotel, dinner and accommodation.<\/p>\n

26th August – Friday<\/h3>\n

Breakfast at the hotel and visit to the middle of the world. Free lunch. In the afternoon guided tour of the historic area. At the end of the visit, transfer to the hotel, dinner and accommodation.<\/p>\n

27th August – Saturday<\/h3>\n

Early breakfast at the hotel, and transfer to the airport to leave, after boarding procedures and pest control, on the flight to the island of Baltra. After the flight, we will arrive at the island where the National Geographic Endeavor II ship awaits us. Luggage collection, and after a new pest prevention control, the luggage will go directly to the ship and will be delivered to each cabin. Transfer to the zodiac boat and start of the adventure. On board the ship, the regime will be full board.<\/p>\n

3 September – Saturday<\/h3>\n

Disembark and transfer to the airport to leave for Quito. Arrival in Quito, transfer to the hotel, dinner and accommodation.<\/p>\n

4th September – Sunday<\/h3>\n

Bed and breakfast. Free day to walk around the beautiful city of Quito, make purchases and enjoy its surroundings. Possibility of doing some optional excursions.<\/p>\n

5th September – Monday<\/h3>\n

In the morning, those participants who wish to, will be transferred to the University of San Francisco, to participate in an academic act of the Royal Academy. (The rest will have the day off until boarding time). Lunch at the University for participants who have opted for this activity. Around 2:30 p.m., transfer to the airport to leave at 5:50 p.m. for Spain on flight IB 6454.<\/p>\n

6th September – Tuesday<\/h3>\n

Arrival in Madrid at 11.30 h<\/p>\n

The objective of the expedition is basically to document the problems in the ecosystem of the Galapagos Islands, which are a reflection of what is also happening in the rest of the world. Said documentation will be carried out through observation, guided visits by naturalist experts, certified by National Geographic, and conferences given by experts, both at the Darwin Foundation and at the University of San Francisco de Quito, at its campus specializing in this subject in the Islands.<\/p>\n

The tangible results of this expedition will be exposed in a series of documents:<\/p>\n

  • Manifesto<\/strong>, signed by the participants, which will be sent to the Secretary General of the UN, and to the Director General of UNESCO, with the conclusions obtained after the trip.<\/li>\n

  • Documentary for Television<\/strong> in high definition format of 52 minutes, whose screenwriter and director, Denis Delestrac, is one of the most recognized and awarded in the world in this type of production.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
